What is an Electrical Inspection?

Explanation of an Electrical Inspection,  Otherwise known as an  “Electrical Inspection Condition Report”

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should therefore be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use. Such safety checks are commonly referred to as 'periodic inspection and testing'.

Once completed you will be issued with an Electrical Condition Report (EICR).

EICR will check the electrical installation against the requirements of BS7671

The EICR will check the electrical installation against the requirements of BS7671 – Requirements for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations), which is out UK National Safety Standard for electrical installations, and contains around 850 Regulations.

The EICR will take into account all relevant circumstances including:

  • Adequacy of earthing and bonding
  • Suitability of the switchgear and control gear
    • An old fusebox with a wooden back
    • Cast iron switches
    • Consumer Unit
    • An untidy mixture of such equipment is likely to need replacing
  • Serviceability of equipment - Switches, Socket-Outlets and light fittings
    • Round light switches and braided flex hanging from ceiling roses to light fittings
    • Older round pin sockets
    • Black switches
    • Sockets mounted in skirting boards may require replacing
  • Type of wiring system and its condition
    • Cables coated in black-rubber
    • Cables coated in lead or fabric
  • Provision of residual current devices for socket-outlets & Circuits in Bathrooms
  • Presence of adequate identification and notices
  • Extent of any wear and tear, damage or other deterioration
  • Changes in use of the premises which have led to, or might lead to, deficiencies in the installation

You should read your EICR and seek advice about any defects or items raised on the report.

If you are unsure what should be done, any repairs do not have to be carried out by the same company and an Electrical Minor Works or Electrical Installation Certificate will act as evidence that the repairs or alterations have been carried out without having to have another EICR carried out.

Please do not hesitate to give us a ring if you do not understand the certificate, there are lots of numbers, and references to the electrical regulations, which are difficult to understand and interpret.

This company was recommended by some people on the Nextdoor website. I wanted new lights installed in my kitchen, dining room and conservatory. Karen got back to me within minutes of my email and both Electricians proved to be efficient, friendly and tidy workmen. I will be keeping their business card handy for future use.

So who would've thought an electrician could have sorted a hot water problem? Well, after a plumber left us with an expensive bill and still no hot water, we called Bright Spark in the hope that they could at least tell us what the problem was. Lo and behold, within 30 minutes, Karen has given us hot water..............excellent service as ever from Bright Spark – thank you

Thank you for attending my “Emergency Call out” there was smoke coming out of my socket. I telephoned at least 15 electricians after 7:15pm (in the evening) when we discovered the smoke coming out of the Socket. Their phones not even being answered. The next on my list was Bright Sparks, who were the only ones to answer the call - literally within a couple of rings, and was answered by a lovely lady who reassured me that help would be on the way. The Call was sent to your emergency electrician who called back within 15 minutes, and was able to attend within the hour, and fix the problem. Thank you. Excellent Service
