Sync Energy Wall Charger 2

The Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 — Everything You Need to Know

Bright Spark Electrical Services are approved installers of Sync Energy EV chargers across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Crowborough. The Wall Charger 2 is the most popular unit we install from the Sync Energy range, and for good reason. It's a well-built, intelligently designed 7.4kW home charger that comes packed with smart features, carries a competitive price, and is backed by a solid warranty. This article covers the full range in detail — the tethered and untethered versions, the dedicated consumer unit that sits alongside it, the smart features that make a genuine difference to running costs, and what to expect when we come to install one.

Sync Energy Car Charger

What Is the Sync Energy Wall Charger 2?

The Wall Charger 2 is a 7.4kW single-phase smart home EV charger made by Sync Energy, which is part of the Luceco PLC group — a well-established British electrical manufacturing business. Despite Sync Energy not being as well-known a name as some competitors in the consumer EV space, there is a substantial, reputable company behind the product, with UK-based technical support and a three-year on-site warranty included as standard.

The charger is compatible with all Type 2 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles — that covers the vast majority of EVs sold in the UK, including Tesla (Model 3, Y, S and X), Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.3, BMW iX, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, Audi e-tron, and many more. If your car has a Type 2 charging socket — and most modern EVs do — the Wall Charger 2 will work with it.

At 7.4kW, it charges at roughly three times the speed of a standard three-pin plug socket. A typical 60kWh battery car (such as a Tesla Model 3 Long Range) will go from nearly empty to full in around eight to nine hours on a 7.4kW charger — straightforward overnight charging from when you get home to when you leave in the morning.

The unit itself is compact — 305mm tall, 201mm wide and 115mm deep — finished in anthracite grey as standard. It has a clean, modern look that sits comfortably on an external wall or in a garage without dominating the space. One of its more underrated features: the fascia panels are interchangeable, so if you want a different colour to better suit the property, that's an option without replacing the whole unit.

Tethered or Untethered — Which One Do You Need?

Sync Energy Wall charger 2

This is the first decision to make, and it's worth getting right before ordering. Both options deliver the same 7.4kW output and share all the same smart features — the difference is purely in how you connect your car to the charger.

The Tethered Wall Charger 2

The tethered version has a cable permanently attached to the unit. That cable is 7.5 metres long — notably longer than most competitors, which typically offer 5 metres — and terminates in a Type 2 connector that plugs straight into your car. You park, pick up the cable, plug in, and that's it. No separate cable to carry in the car, no fumbling around in the boot, no chance of leaving home without it.

For most households, this is the right choice. It's the most convenient option day to day, particularly if the charger is primarily used by one person with one car. The longer 7.5m cable also gives useful flexibility in where the charger can be mounted relative to where the car parks — you don't need to position the unit directly adjacent to the charging port on the vehicle.

The one consideration: if you occasionally charge a vehicle that doesn't have a Type 2 inlet (some older or non-European EVs use a different connector), a tethered Type 2 cable won't work with them. For the vast majority of UK EV drivers in 2025, this isn't a relevant concern.

The Untethered Wall Charger 2 (Socketed)

Sync Energy 2 Unteathered

The untethered version has a Type 2 socket on the unit with an auto-lock mechanism — the socket locks onto the cable when a charge session begins, preventing it being pulled out accidentally or tampered with. You use your own Type 2 cable, which typically lives in the car.

This option suits a few specific situations. If two people with different vehicles are likely to use the same charger and both keep cables in their respective cars, a socketed unit makes more sense. It's also a better choice for commercial or semi-commercial settings — an office car park, a rental property, or premises where you want flexibility around which vehicles can charge. And if you ever change cars, you simply use a different cable — the charger itself stays relevant regardless of the connector type your new vehicle uses.

Both tethered and untethered versions are available in Wi-Fi and 4G variants. The standard version uses Wi-Fi to connect to the Sync Energy App. The 4G variant has a built-in mobile connection, which is the practical choice if the charger is being installed in a detached garage, outbuilding, or anywhere where the Wi-Fi signal from the house doesn't reach reliably. It's worth discussing this with us at the survey stage — a weak Wi-Fi signal at the charger will cause intermittent connectivity issues and interfere with the smart scheduling features.

The Sync Energy Dedicated EV Consumer Unit

When we install a Wall Charger 2, the installation needs a dedicated 32A circuit run from a consumer unit. In many properties, we can take that circuit from your existing main consumer unit — but there are situations where this isn't practical or straightforward, and that's where the Sync Energy dedicated EV consumer unit comes in.

Sync Energy produces a range of pre-populated, purpose-built consumer units designed specifically for EV charger installations. These are a neat solution because they arrive already fitted with the components needed for a compliant EV installation — the protective devices, the surge protection, and the enclosure are all in one package, ready to mount near the charger rather than requiring a long cable run back to the house's main board.

The range covers several configurations to suit different installation scenarios:

The IP65 outdoor-rated unit is the most commonly used for domestic installations where the consumer unit needs to sit externally — on a garage wall, under a car port, or on an outbuilding. It's a 5-module metal enclosure in anthracite grey, pre-fitted with a 100A main switch, 40A MCB, Type 2 SPD (surge protection device), and all internal wiring. IP65 means it's fully weatherproof when closed — adequate for all standard outdoor UK locations. There's also an IP66-rated version for more exposed positions.

The RCD variant replaces the MCB with a 40A 30mA Type A RCD alongside the MCB — this configuration is needed on certain installation types, particularly TT earthing systems, where the earthing arrangement requires RCD protection upstream of the charger. Your installation type determines which protection device is needed, and we'll confirm this at the survey.

The RCBO variant — fitted with a 40A 30mA Type A double-pole RCBO — provides both overcurrent and RCD protection in a single device, and is available in an IP20 indoor-rated version for installations where the consumer unit sits inside a garage or utility room.

All versions of the consumer unit come with a ten-year warranty from Sync Energy — notably longer than the three-year warranty on the charger itself — and are certified to 18th Edition Amendment 3 wiring regulations. They also include a blank module for future expansion, which is useful if you're thinking about adding a second charger or additional circuit down the line.

The practical advantage of using the Sync Energy consumer unit alongside the Wall Charger 2 is that it keeps the installation clean and contained. Rather than running a long cable back through the property to the main board, the consumer unit mounts close to the charger — reducing cable runs, keeping the installation tidy, and making the whole job faster to complete and easier to inspect and maintain in future. The upward-opening cover and removable raised DIN rail make access straightforward, and there's a padlock facility to prevent unauthorised access if needed.

Smart Features: What Actually Matters

Sync EV App

The Wall Charger 2 connects to the Sync Energy App and delivers a range of smart charging functions that go well beyond simply turning the charger on and off remotely. Here's what's worth understanding:

Tariff Sense is the standout feature for most homeowners. It connects directly to your electricity tariff — most major UK providers are supported — reads the pricing structure, and automatically schedules charging for the cheapest periods. Typically that means charging at night on an off-peak rate rather than during the day at the standard rate. On a standard tariff at around 24p/kWh, charging a 60kWh car from empty costs roughly £14. On an overnight off-peak tariff at 7-10p/kWh, the same charge costs £4 to £6. Do that fifty times a year and the saving is significant — several hundred pounds annually for a typical EV driver.

The charger is also compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go, currently one of the most popular EV-specific tariffs in the UK for its competitive overnight rates. When using Intelligent Octopus Go, the scheduling is managed via the Octopus app, but the two systems work alongside each other without conflict.

Auto Solar Charging allows the Wall Charger 2 to integrate with a solar PV installation. A CT clamp is supplied with the charger — this is a sensor that clips onto the incoming supply and monitors what the solar panels are generating and what the house is consuming. When there's surplus solar generation that would otherwise be exported to the grid, the charger diverts it into the car instead. You're using power from your roof rather than buying it from the grid, which maximises the return on your solar investment and reduces your overall charging costs further.

This is a genuinely useful feature for the growing number of homeowners in Kent who already have solar panels fitted — or who are planning to. If you're in that position, or thinking about solar in the future, it's worth knowing the Wall Charger 2 is ready to work with it from day one.

Dynamic Load Balancing is the feature that prevents the EV charger from overloading the property's electrical supply. It monitors the total load the property is drawing and reduces the charging rate automatically if the total demand starts approaching the supply limit. This is particularly relevant in properties where the main fuse is 60A rather than 100A, or where other high-demand appliances — electric showers, induction hobs, heat pumps — are being used at the same time as the car is charging. The load management kit is supplied with the Wall Charger 2 as standard.

Charge Scheduling and Management through the app lets you set a target charge level (say 80% rather than 100%, which is better for battery longevity in most vehicles), schedule start and end times, set a target cost or kWh, and activate boost charging for a quick top-up when needed. You can also pre-condition the car's cabin before your journey — useful on cold winter mornings, as the car warms up while still connected to the mains rather than drawing on the driving battery to do it.

Real-time monitoring gives you a clear view of energy usage per session, cost per session, and historical charging data — so you can see exactly what you're spending on EV charging month by month.

OCPP 1.6J Connectivity means the charger runs on the industry-standard open protocol for EV charge point management. All firmware updates are pushed over the air, free of charge, for the lifetime of the charger. The charger won't become outdated as regulations or tariff structures evolve.

Built-In Safety and What It Means for Your Installation

One of the Wall Charger 2's practical advantages from an installation standpoint is what's built in, reducing what needs to be added externally.

Open PEN conductor protection is integrated as standard, built to IET01:2024. This detects a fault condition on the earth and neutral conductors of the incoming supply — a condition known as a PEN fault — and disconnects the charger automatically. Critically, this means no earth rod is required for most domestic installations, which would otherwise involve drilling into concrete or tarmac and adds cost and disruption to the job.

The integrated RDC-PD protection covers both 30mA AC Type A and 6mA DC fault detection. Standard AC RCDs — the type found in most domestic consumer units — cannot detect DC fault currents. EV chargers produce DC components during charging that a standard RCD is effectively blind to. The Wall Charger 2's built-in protection handles this correctly and meets BS EN 62955 and BS EN 61008.

The RGB LED status indicator on the front of the unit gives a clear visual indication of what the charger is doing at any moment — blue for standby, flashing blue for preparing, green for charging, yellow for no network, red for error. There's also an audible buzzer. This makes it easy to confirm at a glance that a charge session has started correctly, without needing to check the app.

All units are fully compliant with The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, including Schedule 1, and carry UKCA marking. Anti-tamper fittings are concealed within the enclosure, and the Type 2 socket includes an auto-lock that engages when a charge session begins.

What the Installation Involves

Every EV charger installation we carry out begins with a site survey, which is free of charge and no obligation. We look at the property's earthing arrangement, the main consumer unit, the available capacity on the supply, and the best route for the cable from the consumer unit to the proposed charger location. We also assess whether the Sync Energy dedicated consumer unit is the better option for the installation rather than working from the main board.

Once the quote is agreed and a date is booked, a typical installation takes between two and four hours. At the end of it we carry out full electrical testing of the installation, commission the charger, connect it to the app, and walk you through how to use it. You'll receive all the certification and documentation you need, and the installation is notified under Part P Building Regulations as required by law.

The three-year on-site warranty from Sync Energy only applies when the unit has been installed by an approved installer — another reason it's worth using a qualified, registered electrician rather than anyone who happens to be willing.
