This guide walks through what's available, what the smart features actually do, and how to work out which unit is right for you.
Sync Energy is part of the Luceco PLC group of companies — a well-established British electrical manufacturing business with a strong track record in the industry. Sync Energy's chargers are manufactured to a high standard and have been widely adopted across the UK both for domestic and commercial installations. They're not a new startup with an untested product; this is a mature, proven range backed by a UK-based technical support team and a three-year on-site warranty as standard.
The charger range sits within a broader Sync Energy whole-home energy ecosystem, which includes hybrid inverters, modular battery storage and solar diverters. All of it is managed through the same app. For homeowners thinking about future-proofing their energy setup — not just adding an EV charger today but moving towards a more self-sufficient home — Sync Energy is a genuinely cohesive platform rather than a collection of separate products bolted together.
There are two main home charging units in the Sync Energy range: the Wall Charger 2 and the newer Link. Both deliver 7.4kW of single-phase charging, are compatible with all Type 2 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and share the same smart features via the Sync Energy App. The difference is primarily in form factor and installation style.
The Wall Charger 2 has been the mainstay of the Sync Energy domestic range for some time and has earned a solid reputation with homeowners and installers alike. It's a surface-mounted unit with a clean, modern finish — robust enough for outdoor installation and rated IP65 (weatherproof) and IK10 (impact resistant). That IK10 rating means it's been tested to withstand a meaningful knock without damage, which matters if you're parking closely or have kids around.
It's available in two cable configurations:
Tethered — the charger comes with a built-in 7.5m Type 2 cable permanently attached. You plug straight in, no need to carry a separate cable. This is the most popular choice for home use because it's the most convenient day to day.
Untethered (socketed) — the charger has a Type 2 socket with auto-lock, and you use your own cable. This tends to suit situations where multiple people with different vehicles may be using the same charger, or where the driver prefers to keep the cable in the car.

Both configurations are available in Wi-Fi and 4G variants. The Wi-Fi version connects to your home broadband; the 4G variant has its own mobile connectivity built in, which is useful if the installation point is in a garage or outbuilding where Wi-Fi signal is unreliable.
The most recent version of the Wall Charger 2 has been updated specifically based on installer feedback, with practical improvements that make it faster to fit on site — colour-coded push-lever terminals, pre-fitted CT connectors integrated into the base, and laser strip-length markings for a consistent, tidy finish. A new front-mounted button gives one-touch access to RCD testing and Wi-Fi reset, which simplifies commissioning.
The Link is Sync Energy's newer, slimmer offering and it takes a different approach to installation. Rather than a single surface-mounted box, it uses a two-part design: the socket unit mounts flush in the wall at just 37mm deep, and the control box can be positioned up to 50m away — connected via a Cat 5 cable run between the two. The result is an ultra-clean recessed finish with no visible wiring at the socket face.
For homeowners who've spent money on their property and want the charger to be as unobtrusive as possible — particularly on rendered or brick-faced walls, or in integral garages — this is a genuinely attractive option. It can also be installed surface-mounted for properties where chasing in a back box isn't practical.
The Link delivers the same 7.4kW output (configurable from 6A to 32A), has the same smart functionality, and connects to the same app. Built-in SPD (surge protection device) and Type A RCD protection are included, removing the need for additional upstream devices in most domestic installations.
Both units connect to the Sync Energy App, which is where the intelligence lives. Here's what that means in practice:
Tariff Sense
This is one of the most useful features for anyone on a time-of-use electricity tariff. Tariff Sense connects directly to your energy tariff — covering most major UK providers — and automatically identifies when electricity is cheapest. It then schedules your charging accordingly, so you're not running the car up on peak-rate electricity when you could be doing it at 2am for a fraction of the cost.
The charger is also compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go, which is increasingly the tariff of choice for EV drivers because it offers very competitive off-peak rates. With Intelligent Octopus Go, the charging schedule is managed through the Octopus app rather than the Sync Energy app, but the two systems work together without conflict.
To put some numbers on it: if you're on a standard tariff paying around 24p/kWh, a typical 60kWh EV costs around £14.40 to charge from empty. On an off-peak tariff at around 7-10p/kWh, that same charge costs £4.20 to £6.00. Over a year, the difference is significant — we're talking hundreds of pounds, not a few pence.
If you have solar panels installed, this feature allows the charger to use surplus solar generation — power your panels are producing that isn't being used in the house — to charge your car rather than export it back to the grid at a lower rate. Think of it as using the roof rather than the grid to top up the battery.
This is particularly useful during summer months when solar generation is high and household demand is lower during the day. Instead of exporting that surplus at the standard export rate, it goes directly into your car. For homeowners who've already invested in solar PV, it's a straightforward way to extract more value from that system. And for anyone thinking about solar in the future, having a Sync Energy charger already installed means it's ready to integrate from day one.
Through the app you can set a target charge level (charging to 80% rather than 100% is better for battery longevity in most EVs), schedule start and end times, and pre-condition the car's cabin before you leave — so on a cold morning the car is warm before you even step outside, without draining the driving range battery.
Real-time monitoring lets you track energy usage, see what each session has cost, and check the charger's status remotely — useful if you want to confirm a charge has started or check how far along it is.
Both units support OCPP 1.6J — the industry-standard open protocol for EV charger management. All firmware updates are delivered over-the-air, free of charge, for the lifetime of the charger. This means the unit won't become outdated as regulations or tariff structures change.
From an installation standpoint, Sync Energy chargers are straightforward to work with and tick every compliance box required under current UK regulations.
Built-in open PEN conductor protection means no earth rod is needed on most domestic installations — a meaningful cost saving for the customer and a faster job on site. This protection is built to IET01:2024 standard.
Integrated RDC-PD protection covers both 30mA AC Type A and 6mA DC fault detection, meeting BS EN 62955 and BS EN 61008. In practical terms, this is the protection that detects DC leakage — something standard RCDs can't do — and is a mandatory requirement under current regulations for EV charger installations.
All units are fully compliant with The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, including Schedule 1. This is the legislation that specifies smart charging functionality requirements for new EV charger installations in the UK, and compliance is non-negotiable.
The honest answer is that most domestic customers will be well served by the Wall Charger 2. It's a proven unit, straightforward to install, available in tethered or untethered format, and the smart features work reliably. If your installation point is a garage, carport or external wall and you want a clean finish without the complexity of a two-part install, this is the right choice for most people.
The Link is the better option if aesthetics are a priority and the wall construction makes a recessed installation practical. It's particularly suited to newer builds, rendered walls, or homeowners who've specifically asked for the charger to be as flush and invisible as possible. It's also worth considering where the control box can be positioned conveniently away from the socket — for example, inside a utility room or garage while the socket face sits cleanly on an outside wall.
For commercial installations — car parks, office premises, retail units — Sync Energy also produces a Pro Charger range with 7kW and 22kW options, dual-socket variants, and the Sync Energy Balancer which allows up to 16 charge points to be dynamically load-balanced from a single supply. Using an approved installer matters for several reasons. First, the warranty. The three-year on-site warranty is only valid when the unit is installed by an approved, qualified electrician. Second, the installation must comply with BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations) and be notified under Part P Building Regulations — this is a legal requirement for new EV charger installations in England. Third, an approved installer has access to product training and technical support directly from Sync Energy, which makes a difference when it comes to commissioning and troubleshooting.
