Emergency lighting should be checked monthly by a "responsible person" within your business, where the emergency lights should be tested either by a switch key, or turning off the lighting circuits at the consumer unit. When this is carried out that responsible person need to walk past all the emergency lights to show that they are still working. They should be logged down in a fire safety logbook, and should any emergency lights have failed, then the batteries or the physical emergency light should be noted and replaced as soon as physically possible.
Over a period of time emergency lights, can fail and deteriorate. So an annual test should be carried out as above, but for over a longer period – three hours. The British standards recommend that you should have a three hour emergency lighting test once a year, in electrical terms, it is classed as a three hour soak test. Again, this should be recorded in your fire, safety, logbook/emergency, lighting, logbook, noting down the light fittings, which have failed and need to be replaced. During this test, your main lighting circuit she switched off, and your emergency lights to be left on for a three hour period to find out if the light fittings need replacing, or the backup batteries need replacing.
