Unsafe electrical work looks exactly like safe electrical work — right up until it doesn't. A consumer unit wired wrong, a circuit missing an RCD, a bonding connection left off: none of it shows on the surface. That's the whole reason NICEIC registration exists, and it's why we've held it for domestic and commercial work throughout our time trading in Kent.
NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) is the UK's best-known certification body for electrical contractors. It's not a badge you buy — it's assessed. Every NICEIC-registered business is technically inspected on a regular basis against BS 7671 (the UK Wiring Regulations), checked on paperwork, insurance and competence, and can be removed from the register if standards slip.

Hiring an electrician is not just about getting the job done; it's about ensuring the safety and reliability of your electrical systems. None of that shows up in a quote figure, but it's the difference between paying for a job and paying for a job you can prove was done properly.
The Platinum Promise is NICEIC's consumer protection scheme for domestic work. In plain terms: if a registered contractor carries out non-compliant work and then stops trading, NICEIC will arrange for another registered business to put it right, at no extra cost to you, up to a set limit.

NICEIC isn't the only competent person scheme — NAPIT is the other major one operating in the UK, and both are Government-approved to self-certify Part P work. In practice, either gives you a contractor who's independently assessed rather than self-declared. The scheme matters less than the fact that they're registered with one at all. Bright Spark has stayed with NICEIC throughout, so it's the one we can speak to directly.
Anything from a full rewire to a new circuit needs to meet current regs, and NICEIC registration means that's checked, not assumed.
Shops, offices and units carry different testing and compliance duties than a home — PAT testing alongside fixed wiring checks, usually.
EICRs are a legal requirement for rented property, and they need to be carried out — and signed — by someone properly qualified to do it.

Not necessarily — pricing depends on the job, not the certification. What you're paying for with a registered contractor is the paper trail: a certificate that Building Control, your insurer, or a buyer's solicitor will actually accept.
An EIC (Electrical Installation Certificate) is issued for new work — a new circuit, a rewire, a consumer unit change. An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is an inspection of existing wiring, typically needed for landlords every five years or at a property sale.
Only if the original contractor has stopped trading and the work doesn't comply. If they're still trading, the fix comes from them directly — that's a separate process from the Platinum Promise.
Search their business name on NICEIC's Find a Contractor tool. Registration is reviewed regularly, so a photo of an old certificate isn't proof it still stands.
