Electric Shock

Most electric shocks are caused by people touching a live conductor with one part of the body and touching earth with the another. This can cause a current to flow through the body that can block the electrical signals between the brain and muscles; this has a number of effects:

Stopping the heart beating properly.

Stopping breathing.

Causing muscle spasms.

The effect of the shock is dependant on a number of factors including:

Size of voltage.

Part of the body in contact with electricity.

Whether there is water or dampness present.

Length of time the current flows.

The following shows what could happen to the body with different amounts of current flowing during contact with electric supply.

0.5mA would cause very little sensation in the body. You would hardly know that you had received a shock.

6mA causes muscular contractions.

20mA causes difficulty breathing if the shock lasts one minute or more.

50mA could cause ventricular fibrillation (heart stops its regular pumping action, blood circulation ceases and the body is starved of oxygen). 50mA is nearly always fatal.

200mA of electric current causes cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation burns, and would be fatal.
