Basic Principles And Measurement Of Electricity

Hopefuly we are able to explain the Basic Principles and Measurement of Electricity in more simple Terms

The flow or movement of these electrons is called the electric current. There are two forms of current:

  • Direct current (DC) - the flow of electrons along a conductor from one end to another (mainly found in batteries).
  • Alternating current (AC) - produced by a rotating alternator and causes an oscillation of electrons rather than a flow. Energy is passed from one electron to the next along the length of the conductor.

The rate of current flowing in the conductor (wire or cable) is measured in Amperes (Amps). Very small current is measured in Miliamps (mA).

The higher the electrical 'potential difference' is along the conductor the higher the current is. The potential difference is measured in Volts.

  • Low voltage - usually less than 600volts ac between conductor and earth and 1000volts ac between phases (mains voltage).
  • High voltage - normally greater than 600volts ac between conductor and earth and 1000volts ac between phases.
  • Mains voltage - is the common voltage of domestic and workplace electric supply and is taken from three pin socket power (220-240volts ac and 50 cycle/s - Hertz).

The poorer the conductor, the higher the resistance is to the electrical current and the lower the current becomes. This resistance is measured in ohms.

To reduce the possibility of electric shock, electric supply and every circuit must be solidly connected to earth. This means that if a fault or break in the circuit occurs, the current will flow directly to earth, this is known as earthing.

We recently appointed Bright Spark Electrical Services for upgrading our home electrics. Initially their quotation submitted was very professional, every detail of work to be carried out was itemised. The work was completed very efficiently and very speedily. In fact a good tidy electrical job. I believe in giving credit where it is due I would recommend Bright Spark Electrical Services not only for the work completed in my home, but also for their impressive record, which can be easily checked.
