What is the correct size fuse to use in my Plug

“What size of fuse do I need in my plug?" has the potential for many answers, but it's ultimately up to you what will work best.

It's difficult to know how much power or amperage these items need if we don't know how much electricity we'll use; sometimes people believe that bigger sizes are safer because they're intended more as a precaution than anything else, but keep in mind: A higher number doesn't always imply superior quality! Just make sure whatever type/brand you choose is approved by the manufacturers' guidelines, or consult your local electrician.

Equipment such as table lamps should use a 3A fuse, if the old one has blown or not been fitted correctly at all.

The size of fuses used for most other household appliances lie between 5A and 13A. This is just a general idea though; we can't tell you exactly what you need without knowing how big and powerful your appliances are. Although, we're talking about the smaller household items like:

With this in mind, you can see why it is sometimes difficult to recommend exact sizes without knowing more information. If you give an exact size, the person taking advice may look up the wrong information and replace it with something else entirely.

When choosing a fuse it is important to be mindful of what that item needs and pick a safe value considering safety and your budget. You shouldn't pay more than £1 for each fuse.

If you are still confused about the sizes of fuses for different appliances in your home, here are some general guidelines:

• 3A - small appliances such as a table lamp or radio. A 13A fuse should be used on mains-powered equipment such as a food mixer or small power tools.
• 5A - For electrical equipment in the home like television, video, hi-fi system, or computer.
• 13A - for larger pieces of equipment in your homes such as heaters, ovens, cookers, and washing machines. Contact your local Electrician, if in doubt. Don't replace a 3A fuse with a 13A one, as this will almost certainly cause damage to the appliance and possibly a fire risk.
• 13A - For wall sockets that carry equipment such as and cookers.

It's crucial to note that fuses with lesser amperage than your appliances require are prone to triggering when they're in use. This can be really inconvenient.
