If you've bought a new light fitting and need it installed, you're probably wondering what it's going to cost. Ceiling light fitting installation is one of the most common jobs we carry out, and the price is straightforward once you know what's involved. Here's what affects the cost and what you can expect to pay.
For up to three ceiling light fitting installations, you're looking at around £115 plus VAT. That includes removing your old fittings, disposing of them responsibly, and installing the new ones — including appropriate fixings. That last point is worth mentioning: most new light fittings do come with screws in the box, but they're usually not up to the job. We bring our own fixings to make sure everything goes up safely and securely.
When an old fitting comes down, it's not unusual for it to leave a mark or a small hole behind — especially if the previous fitting was a different size or style. We fill these with a light plaster filler as part of the ceiling light replacement, so the ceiling is left neat and tidy ready for your decorator if needed. It's a small thing, but it makes a real difference to the finished result.
We ask customers to supply their own bulbs — and it's worth getting this right before we arrive. Make sure the bulbs you buy are the correct fitting for your new light — check whether it takes bayonet, Edison screw, GU10 or any other cap type, and match the wattage to what the fitting is rated for. Cheap bulbs are a false economy; a decent quality LED will last years and perform far better.
If you're planning to dim your lights, this is really important: your bulbs must be dimmable. Not all LEDs are, and fitting a standard LED bulb to a dimmer circuit won't work properly — you'll get flickering, buzzing, or the bulb simply won't dim at all. Check the packaging before you buy. If you're unsure, give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction.
Standard ceiling heights are no issue. Once you're above 3 metres — think double-height hallways, open-plan spaces or older period properties — the cost to install a ceiling light fitting increases. We need either a scaffold tower or a two-person step ladder setup, which means two electricians rather than one. If you've got a high ceiling, mention it when you enquire so we can quote correctly from the start.
Most standard fittings connect straight to existing wiring without any issues. But if your new fitting is particularly heavy, it needs to be secured into ceiling timber — and that timber isn't always exactly where you need it. If we need to fit a support plate or batten, that adds a little time and will be reflected in the quote. We'll always check and tell you before we do anything extra.
These take longer — sometimes considerably longer. Fittings with lots of crystals, glass rods or individual drops often arrive in multiple boxes and need careful assembly before they go anywhere near the ceiling. To keep your ceiling light fitting installation costs manageable, we often ask customers to give us a hand with the assembly. An extra pair of hands speeds things up and keeps your bill down.
Check your new fitting when it arrives — make sure everything is in the box, nothing is damaged, and your bulbs are ready to go. Returns and missing parts take time to sort, and if something's not right we can't always complete the install on the day. A few minutes checking everything over when the delivery arrives can save a wasted visit.
